Conrad Black said very similar words concerning his business interests, certainly the same assumptive arrogance and bullying.

Whatever it takes to achieve the goal.

But we must all keep in mind, as a leading local progressive pointed out a couple months back, of the sensitivities of 14 year old girls who might off themselves in the face of intemperant free speech.

Mr. Muffley raises a very good point with his last comment. Does going to meetings and planning polite delegations ever produce the result we want?

I, for one, don't think so. The folks who believe in that path to change seem to be satisfied with a tiny bit of progress that takes many years to even notice.

Is that enough? Not for me or apparently Mr. Muffley either.

When I have had complaints directed at me for using more pointed tools such as protests, I like to remind the doubters that women certainly didn't get the vote by being polite and inviting the MPs to tea. We had to chain ourselves to fences, make public spectacles of ourselves being thrown in jail and launching hunger strikes before we succeeded in good old England. At least the hard work there made it easier for women in North America, but it was still no cake walk here either.

Obviously the work of racial integration in the US was not achieved without strong dissent by a lot of people, some of whom were killed for their efforts. Sadly, the powers that be don't often willingly give up their power without a fight, and this hospital mess is no different.

Long may the rabble rise, and to the tea drinkers and meeting goers, I say get out of our way, we have real work to do.

Deb pretty much sums up why I find it so difficult to get involved in health care arguments. The internecine intertwinings of a thousand-and-one acronym'd agencies pushing and pulling away at each other while Biron-The-Boffin pontificates on the editorial page of today's paper, soft-soaping to beat the bullshit band -why- it's enough to make you sick.

Anybody remember that silver-tongued fop that shoed up to drive the final stake in the heart of Port Hope's hospital? I forget his name now. He F.O.'d to Sarnia soon as he got done here. But the first words out of his smarmy little yap when he showed up, and I remember that part like it was yesterday, he said "Call me whatever you want. But just don't call me a hatchet man." Then the eminently-predictable little yuppie son-of-a-bitch picked up the hatchet and before anybody could say "Biron's your uncle!" the hospital was gone.

I see from L'il Lou's comment that the callous attitude I've seen him demonstate to low income people has now spread to the rest of us. He really doesn't like to be challenged, he gets quite visibly annoyed when that happens.

When politicans develop that trait it's an indication their time in power should come to an end.

I don't know anything about Elder Care Northumberland but I know that the Wraparound folks make extensive use of unpaid volunteers in their work with children, so what we have here is paid jobs being lost while unpaid amateurs take over.

What the dinosaurs never take into account is that their traditional pool of volunteers, affluent stay at home wives, is drying up. We're all working now and we need that paycheque too. Those that aren't are too old or at the spa getting their toenails waxed or something, and they don't care much for public service.
