If they need space for meetings or events they should rent one of the many venues in Town like anybody else. The real problem seems to be Town mismanagement of its assets. Rent charged should cover maintenance, repair and eventual replacement at a minimum. Or do you think the Town should just give the building away like it did the Orange Hall? Remember the Pavilion as well. What did the Lions do with that?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23948057.post-10314129154057073692009-10-12T12:14:40.904-04:002009-10-12T12:14:40.904-04:00Many studies revealed it is best for our tax syste...Many studies revealed it is best for our tax system to use the buildings downtown first. These costly studies were paid fully by the taxpayers and they have the right to read them in the open. No need to spend more money for private interest. The service clubs and their "protégés" on council are undermining the financial house of our Good Townspeople.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23948057.post-58841189198437918102009-10-12T09:09:49.051-04:002009-10-12T09:09:49.051-04:00Suggested theme song for Deb's revolution: Bru...Suggested theme song for Deb's revolution: Bruce Cockburn's "I wonder where the lions are."Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23948057.post-18858337846776299912009-10-11T11:36:12.309-04:002009-10-11T11:36:12.309-04:00We all know that this Council has its own private ...We all know that this Council has its own private agenda, and anything that isn't on it is doomed.

They are incapable of even recognising what might be good for the Town. The Lions Club act as if they own it except when paying for repairs. Roof repairs are still maintenance items.

If the Lions Club don't want to pay and move out, then the building can be used for public purposes, or rented out, or sold.

Essentially by receiving the letter for information purposes the Town is saying "NO" to the request. It would be preferable if they made this more explicit, but is nevertheless a defensible position.

Of course this raises the question of why the Town is building a new community centre if they already have one, but this is not a new issue and has been raised many times before.ghnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23948057.post-41973591488235880292009-10-11T08:50:32.879-04:002009-10-11T08:50:32.879-04:00Feel free to post this one Ben.
Interesting, and...Feel free to post this one Ben.

Interesting, and shameful.

How many Rotarians sit on council? I know the Mayor is a long-time Rotarian, and there has always been some form of tension between that group of business "leaders" and the Lions Club.

It's another example of how out of touch the current council is with what's really important to its citizenry. We know about the new "community" centre, a euphemistic term for another temple to the local hockey gods. And we see the spruced up, if colourfully boring downtown core that caters increasingly to the well heeled only. And now this bunch of "we know what's best for you" top bananas is apparently prepared to let the venerable Lions folks simply drift away.

Methinks capital repairs to the Lions building should have trumped that stupid Frink a long time ago; but I'm only a taxpayer, and from another community to boot. So what do I know?

Tom Philp
Lakeport, OntarioBen Burdhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06372169478978720740noreply@blogger.com
