Deb O., you didn't really address any of the comments Anonymous fired at you. You just repeated what you said in your first post. I hate to also incur your wrath, but I agree with some of his/her points. Just because you were one of the disadvantaged, it doesn't give you an automatic license to be intolerant of those who did not. Isn't that what you are upset at the "wealthy" for doing to the "low income"?

Having spent most of my working life as an advocate for the disadvantaged (and having been in that cateogy myself), I know all too well the kind of genuine intolerance they face in our fine upstanding community, and I also know who perpetuates the nasty stereotypes - the affluent, the same ones who have never had to choose between paying the rent or buying food for the kids.

Not all doctors pick and choose their patients to eliminate the poor, but plenty of them do and that, as they say, is a fact.

Thank God for the Port Hope Health Centre which had the prescience to consciously carve out a place for the less fortunate in their Centre.

Wow. Deb's comment is filled with intolerance and prejudice.

I highly doubt she knows enough about the screening process to even begin to comment. I could be wrong and perhaps she is in the medical field and has a wealth of first hand experience. Even so, what right do you have to critique how members of the community spend their income? If someone wants a golf membership instead of a child, or a yacht instead of an elaborate house, or even if they want all of the above ... what does that have to do with their ability to provide quality care to patients?

What if I worked at Kraft on the line for 20 years, but dressed nicely and golfed at Dalewood? Am I unfit to perform blue collar work? Would it be okay if I preferred to sit around in my backyard and drink cheap beer and smoke?

I find your stereotyping disgusting and disrespectful. There are a lot of other points to discuss, but I suspect I would be wasting my words on someone who is clearly reluctant to thoughtfully consider different points of view.

I second Deb's comments about the Port Hope Health Centre. This is a good model as far as I am concerned. It faces slow growth but I think it has a permanent place in our future.

I'm a big supporter of the Port Hope Health Centre; and I would like to see the "Rotarian" style recruitment committee disbanded, for the reasons the BR has outlined.

Not that I know for sure, but I think the reason the PH Centre is still looking for patients is their mandate. They are seeking patients who don't have doctors, are low income or seniors, or have mental health concerns.

In these categories are folks without cars who need public transit to get there, so if they don't live in the immediate area, it's a problem.

These are also people who may not be aware of this new Health Centre yet. They are generally isolated by their circumstances.

Give it time, and I'm sure the Health Centre will be bursting at the seams. They are at the forefront of progressive health care and will have a bright future.

As for the physician recruitment committee, they are only attracting doctors who are interested in our golf courses and yacht club; who have screening processes designed to keep the disadvantaged, the pesky seniors, and those with difficult issues like mental health concerns OUT.

We have more than enough professionals of that ilk in our area, we sure don't need more!
