I had few problems when I was a gunner in 33rd Medium Artillery, except that whenever I went on maneuvers in Petawawa, I was found to be a lousy shot. I do better with mataphors and similes than 155mm howitzers. Better to have gotten rid of me, than some horny brass making out in a military vehicle.

Did any other General in Canadian history besides Rick Hillier ever leave his troops in the field during the heat of battle?

I know Rick Hillier is a folk hero, a lantern-jawed straight shooter and a darned good hand with the Meedjah and all that. But, well, er....he left his troops to get into, um, consulting work of some kind if I'm not mistaken.

Look, I'm not leading the charge for relief of Gordon at Mafeking or anything but as I'm sure Wally will tell you, a dervish is a dervish and it seems to me we're surrounded by them and just as we're surrounded by them -General Rick takes a powder.

Or am I missing something here -not being much of a flag-waver and all.

The age-old practice of promoting (elevating) individuals to the level where their failures become their dominant features, is alive and well, even in the armed forces and politics.

Your example and the one in Trenton are real. Politically, the same thing will happen if Brocanier is annointed as mayor. Time will tell.
