If there was an unstated question, why the literary hijinks? Why ask the question if ya gots the answers? A 20 year old conservative has filed court papers asking that this new law be ruled unconstitutional because it is age discrimination.

Good for him. While he's representing himself, I suspect he'll find lots of help from his tory friends who'd love to put the boots to Dalton's latest nanny state move. Even Peter Kormos has agreed with the youngster and predicted the stupid law could be in trouble.

Should be interesting.Deb Ohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06012853847654670916noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23948057.post-67251940721229167392010-08-03T20:07:21.609-04:002010-08-03T20:07:21.609-04:00Anonymous: Quite right, of course. It's when there are conflicting opinions and views that time seems to drag on and on. You have to question where the disagreements are causing the delays, and what those disagreements are.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23948057.post-48128687452782471912010-08-03T13:11:19.851-04:002010-08-03T13:11:19.851-04:00It boils down to one startlingly simple fact: If y...It boils down to one startlingly simple fact: If you are in the Ontario Government's targeted age group you are automatically guilty until you prove yourself innocent.

It's a sick, sick, sick little piece of work.Merklin Muffleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05850284624604652178noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23948057.post-81697837864883617512010-08-03T12:37:25.080-04:002010-08-03T12:37:25.080-04:00I'm voting with Ben and Merk on this one. The whole graduated license thing is in violation of the Charter in my opinion.

Let's try banning drivers over age 75 and see what happens. I'll bet their Charter rights are taken much more seriously than those young drivers.

And another thing: how can they pass a law so quickly, when the Legislature isn't even sitting, and yet their promises to reform welfare are still on the shelf after 7 years? If the Charter o...I couldn't agree more, Ben!

If the Charter of Rights and Freedoms forbids age-based discrimination then this surely is a Charter case -and hopefully there's a law grad out there somewhere willing to take it to the Supreme Court. Also, it promotes a kind of fear-based hatred of 18-to-24-year-olds in that (a) they are an identifiable group and (b) if you were to supplant '18-to-24-yeqr-olds' with 'Catholics' or 'persons of colour' or 'people of limited income' all hell would break loose. We fear our kids much in the same way we worship our cops. One is as totally irrational as the other but because no newspaper -especially around here- is ever going to editorialize against this law (anymore than they editorialized against roadside justice aka -the .05 travesty) it'll probably just become second nature to us in time and we won't even notice the hobnail boot marks on our necks in the morning. The papers hereabouts are far too excited about the weekly Boy-In-A-Box-Parade, too busy trying to get yet another park, parkette or parking meter named after Chris Garrett, too busy covering face painting at the mall -and especially too busy to notice that they're slowly killing themselves- to be bothered with things like constitutional rights and fairness for all.

That stuff's all old hat really isn't it?

(By the way -remind me again how our own MPP, Lucky Louie, made his fortune? Something to do with cars and teenagers and speed wasn't it? Or am I just imagining things?)Merklin Muffleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05850284624604652178noreply@blogger.com
