Tom P is under the impression that the local PC's do not have anyone interested in running in the next election. This is simply not the case. I know for a fact that that "Rob" guy Tom P footnotes will be seeking the nomination. He has not disappeared from the PC landscape; in fact he has for the last three and a half years held the 2nd VP position on the Riding Executive; been to all their conventions and is currently gearing up for the nomination.

"Rob", last I checked in with him, is not afraid of Mr. Rinaldi by any means. In fact, he is looking forward to the time when he and Lou can debate the issues that this Liberal government has not yet addressed.

There are PC's out there waiting to step forward, but timing, as in battle, is paramount.

Given the sad state of politics in this country right now, at all levels of government, it does not surpise me that people aren't lining up to run.

Who would want to set themselves up for the raining down of crap on their heads every time they speak? The populace has become very agressive and rude, each person thinking theirs is the only way and often becoming abusive when they don't get what they want.

People seem to have lost the understanding that there are winners and losers in every debate, every decision. Compromise only seems to upset everyone, but how else can we proceed?

For women especially, politics is a particularly scary tight rope to walk successfully. Just ask Helena Geurgis, who certainly made some mistakes but hardly deserved the freezing out she got from Harper and the Boys.

It takes a very brave, or a very foolhardy, or maybe even very commited person to choose politics as a vocation these days.

Try your sweet godamndest to find a name, any name, in that post (or the comment that follows it) that might, if you took your laptop down to Shoppers Drug Mart and wired yourself up to their blood pressure monitor, that MIGHT, JUST MIGHT show a fucking microscopic blip of excitement when that name is spoken.

Tell ya what: That's the thing about Dead Conservatives; They're DEAD for Christ sakes. Why don't we get that? Why do we keep excavating and exhauming these stiffs? What, other than some kind of morbid curiosity regarding decomposition, makes Doug Galt and/or anything else half-dead named Galt even remotely interesting?

Cathy is a wonderful person, but not a politician. I'm guessing she got the nod several years ago because of pressure brought to bear on the local party organizers by her husband's supporters, and a lingering fondness by some senior members of that org to have a "Galt" at Queen's Park. Alas, Cathy was not Doug, and lacked the public presence to take on Lou. Add John Tory's remarkable timing gaff re religious schools, and her fate was sealed. Then .... nothing.

One should remember that Brian Ostrander, the walking ego who sits on Brighton's council, and who now wants to be King of that municipality, was also a contender at the Con's nomination meeting that put Cathy on the podium. So was her campaign manager, a school teacher named 'Rob' from the Warkworth area who's name quickly disappeared after Cathy lost to Lou. There were others, and Ben is right; where the hell are they now when their party has an excellent chance of regaining the riding next year? (Sorry, Greens, but it just isn't in the cards; and you NDPrs pat Christianson perpetually on the back, even though local voters don't want him)

Let's hope that neither the local Cons nor the NDP believe Slippery Lou is SOOOOO popular that he can't possibly be toppled. Then again ... and from personal experience contacting all three major parties recently with concerns and ideas ... none of their 'grassroots' people seem remotely interested in entering into dialogue with potential voters, let alone promoting a viable candidate to take on Racetrack Rinaldi!
