And that, Sir (or Madame or whatever...) is EXACTLY the "big deal" -that so many "firefighters show up at every fenderbender."

Further, those firefighters are almost invariably accompanied by the redoubtable Pete Fisher, Sun stringer extrordinaire, whose job it seems to be to convince us all that were it not for whole platoons of firefighters showing up at every fenderbender or, as in the extant case, an entire regiment of heavily armned cops showing up in full battle gear to investigate an ajar door, our very lives would be in peril.

Get the picture: It's about selling fear, acquiessing to authority and, above all else -kissing ass. And Uniform Fetishism too. Let's not forget Uniform Fetishism especially because it ain't just weak-in-the-knees ingeuneues who suffer from Uniform Fetishism (insofar as it can be called "suffering") -it's supposedly hard-bitten newspaper photographers too.

There is much more to this story than is being reported. Knowing a little about how police services operate, they would not call in a tactical team unless they believed that an armed person was inside. Whether or not they had reason to believe so, is another story.

another thing - human judgment is prone to unequal or preferential treatments and over- and under-reaction, so to achieve some sort of guidance to minimize those concerns we try to reduce that element. Of course, the minute you take human judgment out of the equation you are committed to prescribed courses of action, and then those have to be inclusive of any eventuality that may present itself. Those challenges get little shrift when the activists make their exclamations. While that's a reality, it need not be ignored. There is a place for other views and perspectives and their impact on these things, and to encourage a more balanced approach from both sides of the fence in the issues.

This is an example of what we get when police budgets continue to increase in the face of falling crime rates.

Overkill!

With nothing else to do, the cops are eager to grab their rifles and have some fun. It's why they became cops in the first place. For most of us, being professional means showing restraint and keeping emotions under control; for them, the adrenaline rush is all that counts.

It also explains why kids sleeping off a party in the park get arrested these days. Got to keep laying charges, however lame, to justify their budgets and "prove" crime is rampant.

I'm sure Pete Fisher was on the scene and cheerleading the entire farce. I can hardly wait for the cutting reportage wherein no questions of any value will be asked and no answers forthcoming. Just business as usual -whatever the hell that business is.
