A lot of people now are part of the "daycare generation" they shout rather than talk. Their manners are not the ones we expect from a person who had a city life, or a professional life, and who lives in Town.

Secondly a lot of farmers move to Cobourg. They have no idea we have by-laws (they know we don't enforce anything Cobourg or Port Hope).

This is why we see: cars parked on no parking zone, loud machinery, parking on boulevards, parking on lawn, lots of barking dogs, writing on the sidewalks, shouting from one side of the street to the other, cursing and spitting.

Generally speaking they don't keep their noises to their own household. Lovely Town hey?

Loud music outside of a church on a wedding day is quite unfortunate, but Anonymous #490742 is out of his/her tree. Just because music is loud, does that make it satanic? There are many things that might increase crime, but noise is not one of them. How does the sound of a chainsaw lead to criminal activity? There may be many intriguing cases on the docket, but I can assure you that if you listened to the facts of those cases ambient noise would not be a factor. Get some earplugs.

Change is never easy, never simple. Just because people disagree that does not mean that good ideas can't be born and nourished here.

I also dislike the useless snarky comments that come from those who have nothing constructive to offer, but as difficult as they make it to have useful discussions, they don't make it impossible, so most of us just soldier on.

We are all learning how to communicate in this new medium and that takes time. It's one reason why I dislike anonymous comments, there's no responsibility for what is claimed. At least when I sign my name, I know I have to be accountable for my words, and that makes a difference.

Don't give up, it gets better and better the longer we keep trying.

In today's world, it is impossible for communities to universally share any common values from one end to the other. That makes it virtually impossible to accommodate and satisfy such diverse values and tenets. That essentially ensures an endless supply of complaints and dissatisfaction wherever you turn.

The most popular response comes in the form of compromises and the doling out of "bones" to keep appeasements as equitably dispersed as possible, even though some "bones" are the very antithesis of others. What else can we do, or expect? It is in this context, that we see much of the upset, dissatisfaction, disappointment and disillusion that seems to dominate these discussions and keeps them from generating alternative ideas for solving these ageless dilemmas.

It is also in this spirit that we sometimes see the call for new and unique ideas to deal with them, here in the various discussions that begin but then deteriorate because of the various individual pet peeves that so often efficiently douse the sparks that could turn into raging infernos of originality.

I hope that the anon's who try to contribute here are resilient enough to weather the downdrafts that swirl endlessly in aimless dervishes of disillusion.

It seems to me if the Town insists on using the Victoria Park Bandshell for all sorts of loud amplified "music" all summer long then the solution is to jack it up and turn it around. Then they can crank it up so they can hear it in Rochester if they want, but give us residents who happen to live near the Park (and beyond) a break.

Funny thing, it seems no one on the Town Council lives anywhere near Victoria Park.

If you disagree

1. That LOUD satanic music in front of a church stimulates juvenile delinquency, it's fine with me. You have the right to your opinion;

If you don't believe
2. That excess of noise (motorbikes, chainsaws, screeming, no muflers, cursing, shouting etc..) is a source to growing crime, also fine with me;

If you read exclusively the local newspaper, it's fine with me. If you never travelled, except to Baltimore, it's fine with me. If you never studied in a University and compete intellectually with others, it's fine with me. If you were never on the Dean's list of a University in your country or elsewhere,its fine with me.

Allow me to remind you of the following:

a) there are many criminal fires in my Town;
b) a policeman was viciously murdered in my Town;
c) people are leaving huge angry notes taped on their front door in my Town;
d) a few years ago, there was a bomb in a basement on Chapel st. - people had to evacuate their home-e) the Ontario Court has very intriguing cases on the dockets,
f) perturbing lawsuits are emerging in my little Town;
etc... etc... etc...

Perhaps IT IS TIME TO demand of you logical arguments to express yourself in the future. This Town is also MINE.

Discriminating people (me and lots of others, including Ben)and be unruly are not part of a positive debate. WHY?

1.- It doesn't open a collective vision;
2.- It doesn't lead to positive conclusion;
3.- It refrains others to participate fairly and honestly. Instead it invites a cesspool of vicious attacks and sets the blog adrift;
4.- I believe in the healthy growth of my community and I am interested in the contribution of positive ideas, like others;

Latest news : the Rib fest music was inside the church with a lovely wedding this morning. They were quiet and not very pleased.

Last weekend, or the one before that, the Park held an extravaganza vomitting-like the Exorcist in a transe.

You know very well there are signs respecting the peace and quiet of respectable people and taxpayers such as NO HONKS-$350.fine, QUIET RESIDENTIAL AREA, NO TRUCKS RESIDENTIAL AREA, NO JAKE BRAKES, NO LOUD SPEAKERS etc... as well as standards to judge public community events.-- This particular event assembled the worse kind of roller bladers to curse loud on the streets all weekend!---

In England vandalism has brought nothing but problems to security and to the public in certain areas, as you know. Time to put a stop to all that nonsense, and fast !!! Noisy communities give birth to violence which become engulfed in crime and deteriorate the livelihood of a lot of people.

The solar panel story illustrates beautifully the ridiculous sense of entitlement that some people have. These complainers didn't even bother to learn the facts before they started bleating, and some of them tried to make provincial rules the fault of the company's owners instead of the Province. Jeez.

In the same vein, a recent letter to the editor of Northumberland News complained about rude, loud fishermen who dared to anchor their boat too close to the writer's cottage, subjecting them to the egregious sounds of other human beings.

Since when does buying a cottage include exclusive use of the water outside it? For that matter, since when does buying a house near a park entitle the owner to dictate how the park is used?

On the other hand, Ben is just an old codger complaining about loud music a couple of times a year. We live half way to Elgin Street from the Park, and can only hear the bands in Victoria Park when there's no traffic on the street. When we do hear them, it's only faintly, certainly not enough to drown out conversation or the TV.

Ben turned into an old codger when he supported the banning of train whistles all those years ago. It's very disappointing. He's just no fun anymore.

I agree fully that if you want the view in perpetuity, you have to buy the land.

About a year ago a bunch of angry neighbours who wanted to save an historic house in Toronto's Beaches railed against the plans of a small-time developer to put 2 houses on the double lot. It was the first time I ever felt zero sympathy for that kind of neighbourhood activism -maybe because I'm losing my shirt trying to save an 1840's house in Port Hope. If the concerned citizens of The Beaches so badly wanted to save the property, why didn't they buy it? I don't know of too many poverty cases living in the Beaches.

Why didn't they put their money where their collective mouth is? Same thing with people out in the country around here.
