Last January 2009, Northumberland Today printed a photo of Sgt Peter Mclean in mid-stride running up the driveway to arrest a suspect.

Pete Fisher just happened to be there before the bust went down. Sommeone close to Pete Fisher suggested that Mr Fisher utilizes a scanner, which is legal to anyone to use. It is common knowledge.

I brought these concerns to the Cobourg Police Services Board and received a reply from Police Chief, Paul Sweet.

He wrote, "I do know generally that a number of Media have very sophisticated devices for monitoring our communications dispite our best efforts to avoid this. Also, there is no legislation that prohibits the monitoring of our communications. This not only applys to the Cobourg Police Service but unfortunatly most Police Services."

Knowing what they know about scanning devices, the question is, "why would the Cobourg Police broadcast the address of an imminent takedown over their communication devices?"

Seems a tad unprofessional.

Oh please. Everyone knows that some of the local media have a "man crush" for the local LEOs. One of them is so unable to write an article critical of the CPS that the duty always falls to another of his coworkers. He's more propagandist than journalist. The LEOs just use him and laugh.

actually, to clarify, it was not set up. what happened is there was a robbery at the mac's milk in downtown cobourg...i went to it...they called canine in...then there was the call at tim hortons how a person was barricaded...so i went...when i got there, that's the photo...i took it from the outside, then thought, screw it, and went inside and took the pic...any other q's to educate you with?

as long as there is a benefit to the police, of having pictures of them performing their duties in a forthright manner, the relationships you refer to will likely continue to flourish. If, however, those pictures were to tell another side of the story, we might see some changes as well. Just a bit of rumination.
