The Vancouver Sun published a story suggesting that Oprah might "pull up stakes at her daytime TV-talk show ... and move to her namesake digital cable channel, OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network)."

Is that a solution: that some Canadian Oprah takes over publishing of the TO Star just for the heck of it? Maybe this wild-about-hockey Basisle could be "talked" into it?

Not if you and others like you cancel their subscriptions and leave the paper deliverers with no one to deliver their papers to.

You know, given the dreck being foisted off in The Globe by the likes of the appalling Christie ("...he found his balls.") Blatchford, you've got me thinking The G&M probably got rid of their copy editors around the same time they threw the Style Book, Heather Mallick, Jan Wong and anything else worth keeping, overboard. (Except, of course the appalling Little Eddy Greenspon whom they never should have let on board in the first place.)

I was listening to Matt Galloway interviewing John Miller 'Professor Emeritus' at RyeHigh and noted disgraced former head of FARE in Port Hope while driving home tonight. The Ol' Prof had a few good points to make but as the question veered down the path of just exactly where the 'offshore' editing was going to be done from, every finger pointed, for some reason, to India. No one seemed to have any proof that India was involved. It was just that, well, everything else seems to have been outsourced to India, that's all. You know, cell phone call centers and all that. But The Good Professor fretted so sufficiently about both the Decline In Newspapers in general and how, specifically, such draconian measures will make The Star all but unrecognizable that it was all I could do not to drive off the nearest bridge and end it all as quickly as possible.

If John Miller understand one thing it's this: If it bleeds it leads.

If there's something he doesn't understand it's this: the likes Rohinton Mistry and Michael Ondaatje understand the English language far better than many Canadian newspaper editors. Maybe, just maybe, this is a change for the better.
