I think it's reasonable to assume that if the town has a plan for the tourism department to execute, it also has a purpose in mind that requires such a plan.

Without knowing what that plan is, in it's entirety, we can only speculate on its progress, success or failure. So far, the majority here have concluded that the illusive plan is incomplete or poorly formulated. That also is sheer speculation.

Before making a sweeping observation on the above, one should investigate further to have all the relevant information at hand. That doesn't seem to have stopped any of the commenters here from drawing definite conclusions.

It also helps to have all the info when making suggestions on alternatives to what's being done at present. Events such as the ones that are carried out in our public spaces all require town permission through By-law enactments and those By-laws usually set some pretty specific requirements and standards after open discussion at council. Where then were all these commenters when that was happening?

If we're not satisfied with council's performance, why do we continue to re-elect the same people term after term? What will we do this time? If we repeat ourselves again, to the extent possible, does it mean that the overwhelming majority of the voting town folk are quite satisfied with all of this and it's only a few squawkers that live on this blog who object to so many of the political decisions made by council?

It is disappointing that the town turned down a suggestion to form a committee to oversee Victoria Park specifically, despite having a Parks and Recreation Committee already in place, one that seems to operate too deep in the background. It begs the question as to its effectiveness vs its usefulness as a repository for blame.

Funny that nobody can say tourist without "money". This is typical of our Town. The issue is what do you expect as a tourist? this is such a one way street in Ontario. In Cobourg, according to statistics, 88% of the population visit within 50/70 miles radius. No wonder why they are so closed mind.

As far as Mr.Keeler, allow me to say that some people have no respect in keeping an intelligent communication on this blog. Our local newspaper cannot expand to the front step of your blog.

"Tourism" is only economically effective when it separates people from out of town and their money.

It has been said that the Town of Cobourg has created this "problem" , by successful advertising and creating a helluva nice beach and surrounding area. Although this is true, it is interesting to wonder exactly how the tourism department expected to separate people from their money.

If the focus of tourism adverts is the beach, is it not expected that most people will want to come to use the beach? If I decide I will take my family to this wonderful beach-town called Cobourg, I might like to try to stay as close to the beach as possible. How many waterfront hotels are there is Cobourg? One. How many other hotels are within walking distance of the beach area? One. What else can my young family do in Cobourg other than attend the beach? Is there anything? Maybe a show that would be of interest to all members of the family would be playing at the Park Playhouse - not likely. Maybe there would be more than one store that each member of the family might be interested in - less likely.

Where Cobourg made their mistake is building exclusively condos on their harbourfront. A large conference centre and hotel would have done a booming business. There would be crowds of people who would need food/booze/a good time, and the place would be filled from May to November. With inadequate hotel rooms near the action, you are bound to get a mostly daytrip crowd. If you want separate people from their money you need to offer them something. Right now, it's obvious that all Cobourg is offering is the beach.

sadly I don't think the issue has anything to do with tourism. The real truth is Cobourg is filled with a large portion of racists. If Victoria Park was packed with white people in the same numbers there wouldn't even be an issue. I hear the racial undertones every where I go. The people that have moved here from Toronto etc have the attitude about multiculturalism the only way to live with is to move to a new "all white" community. They are horrified that they were followed.

If that phrase were not in the post, there would simply be a focus on all the issues that span the entire spectrum of visitors, including marathoners, ladder-climbers and rib-strippers. By choosing to include that one phrase, you direct the focus onto one issue and that is very disappointing. Why then do you wonder when the resultant comments revolve around that issue?

Why not try to rephrase the question so as to ignore the "do not look like them" aspect, which really is just one of many, and see how the ensuing discussion develops? Let's see who makes it an issue and if it does get introduced in their comment. That's where the problem really smolders.
