Rick Hillier, hero to all, gets out while the getting is good, leaves his troops in the field, takes up consulting, muses on running for the Consevatives and, in general The General proves himself to be a pragmatic opportunist. Does he show up on anybody's Moral RotMeter? Hell no. We're just so gosh darn happy to be baffled by the bullshit it isn't even funny anymore. At least it isn't as funny as it was when Hillier said, at City Hall in Toronto, that one of the reasons we were in Afghanistan was to ensure than Afghan women had the right to wear high heels. I'm not making that up. He actually said it.

(Gee -whatever happened to wearing red on Fridays or that Brian Muntz clown and his Red Car Rally down the 401 in suppot of the troops? Those were the days, eh....)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23948057.post-44572511330964801322009-10-15T16:18:03.526-04:002009-10-15T16:18:03.526-04:00Maybe the rot has always been there, ( and then so...Maybe the rot has always been there, ( and then some ). Now we get instant news reports, that's all. Everything can be reduced to a gossip sheet. Deb, it's tragic, but a mediocrity like Harper thrives in this world.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23948057.post-78781595478491262952009-10-15T11:08:27.616-04:002009-10-15T11:08:27.616-04:00Have read Dobbin's short article 3 times now b...Have read Dobbin's short article 3 times now but it continues to be like scrambled eggs with no salt, i.e. just lacking somehow.

Blaming capitalist dogma in our universities is fine but hardly accounts for all of the rot. What worries me is how we fight back, because it seems like we've all given up, confining ourselves to voting NDP and posting on blogs to feel like we're doing something, anything about it.

Big Brother must have snuck in and taken over while we were all out back having a puff. How did they ever sneak Harper past us, that scheming heartless android who is now close to taking total power in our beloved country.

Maybe that will wake us up, d'ya think?Deb Onoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23948057.post-64973226943016464262009-10-15T08:37:32.215-04:002009-10-15T08:37:32.215-04:00William and Ben, Just a point of procedure. That learning has come the hard way. The same is true from most internet users who are not newbies fresh out of the box. So, as well as providing a link, provide your own summary of what is worthwhile in the content a person will find there. Most will only read the summary without clicking the link. Simply posting a link and saying "click this, you'll like it" raises every security suspicion there is.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23948057.post-28298597372947090162009-10-14T21:42:04.480-04:002009-10-14T21:42:04.480-04:00I agree with most of the article. On the whole the individuals working for these and similar departments are dedicated to doing their job in protecting the public. The problem is that when they do so they are frequently overruled by the management at the top or political level.

Most of you will remember Tunagate, when a government Minister decreed that the tuna was OK, but all the Minister's decrees were unable to improve the quality of the tuna.

Similarly there was the case where the doctor at Sick Kids was castigated for not approving a dangerous drug.

The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (a union) is constantly battling the Canadian Government on behalf of employees who have been disciplined for doing their job properly.Greg Hancocknoreply@blogger.com
