Day 6
A late start to the day today 10am for a tour of the old City of Split (wiki ref here). Walk to the seafront and enter a completely walled Roman City (wiki ref here). Consisting of the Palac, Barracks and Churches and warehouses for the seaport. The place was packed – cruise ship passengers all over the place. A very complete tour and interesting and educational too.
A thirty-five minute drive to the island of Trogir (wiki ref here), another old Roman City but not as big as Split. Lusting for a ‘sitdown’ I moved quickly to a local cafe and ordered a coffee. The waiter asked “Expresso?” – “Sure”. I came and I put in the sugar and emptied it in four sips. Answering the call to get going (we only had twenty minutes) got up and moved on. Three hundred yards down the road I realised that my hat was missing. So the coffee break cost me 2.5 euros and a $45 hat – “c’est la vie”.
Off to the Vineyard for a wine and food pairing. The Kastel Sikuli winery was set up for tasting the place was as good as any Prince Edward County or Niagara facility. The home of the original Zinfandel this winery is a small one that exports to the world. Ivan, the owner, explained the food and the wine that was the suggested pairing. First up were two ‘gifts from the kitchen’ with the welcome Prosseco we off to the races with the wines. The first gift
was an egg-cup sized mix of trout caviar, cream cheese and tuna. First course was a sushi like piece of fish with shrimp, capers, swordfish and olive oil. Second course was a soup – fish (Hake) with shrimp; the wine was a Dalmation white. Third course was a piece of lamb, that we all agreed didn’t taste like lamb but was good anyway. The final course – dessert was a fig, cream cheese, and almond crumbs. A very good day! There will be pics on the pics page.
