McGuinty's blown it again

As usual the pols in the ruling party in Ontario have misread the winds of change. In trying to give the budget goodies to people who will vote for them they have missed the target.

Despite the inadequacies of the budget, and there are plenty of them, the goodies will fall flat if they (the libs) think that those goodies will be repaid in votes. The bottom line is that by invoking class warfare by giving the poor the goodies and ignoring the selfish middle class, class warfare will break out. The Middle class will hate the libs for not being given anything and not vote for the libs and the beneficiaries of the largess, the low income demographic, don't vote!

You could be right about the ultimate effect of the provincial budget, but I want you and your readers to know that the poor didn't get as much as you might think.

Although the media is claiming that the new Ontario Child benefit ends the infamous claw back of the National Child Benefit from people on welfare, that is far from true.

This year they'll get a one time payment of $250 per child in July, then nothing more til next July, when only about $50 of the $122 per child currently clawed back will be replaced.

And get this, at the same time they start paying monthly, in July 2008, they start REDUCING the welfare rates! How's that for a shell game?

Finally, if people don't have kids, they don't matter. Singles on Ontario Works will go from $548 to $559, starting in November this year. That's for a month folks, not per week.

For singles on ODSP, their rates increase from a maximum of $979 all the way up to $999, again not til November.

So don't be in too big a hurry to assume that the poor were winners in that budget. If they were, I'd hate to see what the losers got!

What we need is some some straight talk about the lie these guys keep telling - The clawback has been eliminated" as you point out it has not. We must prove it and keep pounding the message home.
