Did he really say that?

Now for a moment of truth. Some guy at the County, probably a consultant who doesn't care whether he is invited back, actually committed verbal heresy. He said, recollect, "Having a WalMart and Home Depot isn't economic development". now ain't the the truth, but I never expected to hear it coming from a hired gun. I just hope that the elected councillors sitting in the same room heard it. Say it again - "Having a WalMart and a Home Depot isn't economic development"

But what about all those fabulous part time jobs they create?

Now the folks who don't get enough hours at Wal Mart can try to fill in the gaps with a few extra hours from Home Depot. That way they can maybe afford an occasional meal at McDonalds, another fine corporate citizen that's only here because they care so much about us.

Yah - I hate that new home depot. Especially the fact that it brings 130 new jobs to our community. Its not like we have enough jobs already.

If this was real economic development those jobs would be well paid full time work with benefits, not starvation level subsistence where the employees must juggle two or more of them just to pay the rent.

The stress levels and fracturing of family cohesion have consequences for all of society and those of us fortunate enough to flourish in today's economy should be doing everything we can to raise the floor for all of us.
