The Tuesday read

Not quite the last word on election signs
Last week the County banned election signs from all County lands, and that includes roadsides. This action drew the interest of Murray Weppler, a veteran campaigner and planter of thousands of signs, he pointed out that under Federal law nobody is allowed to hinder the "political message" unless it is for safety reasons. Seems straightforward to me; now all we need is a lawsuit against the County and we can get our political expression back.

The search for a Kraft replacement
The Mayor of Cobourg, as chair of the search committee for a replacement for Kraft, was reported as saying he has met with a few potential investors. That's OK for some but until he says who they are can we be sure that the site will remain an industrial employment site. It wouldn't surprise me if one of the groups was Mitch Goldhar's Smartcentre group. specialising in the turnaround from industrial to commercial and the attendant profits contained therein, Mr Goldhar has planted shopping malls in old industrial locations. That's what we don't need on that site - another shopping mall!

Let me be the first foolish one to say this in public
The other day I was almost involved in a traffic accident because of the person in front of me. It was a white box on small wheels driving in the middle of the road. The occupant of this travelling coffin is a disabled person, whom I have since discovered is deaf, so she would never hear any horn blown at her. This white box (a motorised wheelchair) was travelling so slowly that when I spoke to the person who almost hit me from behind said, "You were going so slowly I thought you were parking!". It is a bloody menace and so are the other motorised wheelchairs in the road. I can understand why they are not on the sidewalks but not all of the sidewalks are impassable. So "GET OFF THE ROAD." BTW if I am the only one of this opinion tell me.

Now we wait for the accounting
The Winter Festival appeared to be successful, in the Park. But did the visitors only stay in the Park or did they shop on the Main St. The Main St. didn't appear to be any busier than normal from where I was on Saturday, so who did benefit: the Merchants or the families in the Park, and congratulations to the setup people in the Park, or both. And did the sale of buttons cover the actual and total costs? The final report will tell.

The Police issue in Kenora
The Chief of Police stood up at a Police Services Board meeting last week and dared them to disband the Service. Interesting times up North but with ramifications down here. Read the story here.

Your comments about the person on the road in the wheelchair show not only a lack of human compassion but complete ignorance of the Human Rights Code.

Would you like the disabled to be simply shot like horses that can't pull the plough anymore? Or would it be enough to just confine them to their homes where they won't inconvenience you?

Your complaint should be with the Town for failing to ensure that sidewalks are cleared, not with the people who are forced out into the road as a result of the Town's failure to meet their obligations.

You might want to read today's story in the Cobourg Star about a woman's ordeal trying to get home from the train station in her wheelchair.

Remember my friend, but for the Grace of God and all that - you should think about that for a moment.

Let me say that your argument is correct - the problem may be with the Town in not enforcing the snow clearing of the sidewalks. But let me tell you in this case, and in the case of the other disabled person I have observed on University Ave, the fault is theirs. The sidewalks are clear. They prefer the road and that is the problem. When they can drive cars let them on the road until then they stay on the sidewalks. The disabled lady in the white box is well known downtown and she is a problem on the sidewalk, she cannot see properly and she is deaf.

This is an issue that nobody wants to tackle. How many times have you been in the way of speedy "Wrinklies on trikes" quite few I should imagine. It is a matter of tolerance and acceptance I know but some of the people in chairs certainly have a sense of entitlement as opposed to one of sharing the space!!

Yes, I will concede your point on the issue of "sense of entitlement".

I also believe if the sidewalk is useable, that's where they should be. I wonder what the legal status of these things on the road is?

It has been my observation that many people, with little in their lives except for their disability, become obsessed with themselves to the point it's all they think about. It's sad really.

Think of the congestion and chaos 10 years from now when the front wave of the baby boomers begin to enter their 70's all with their set of wheels. Hopefully their dream will come true; pensioners will get prescriptions free, which means medicinal marijuana -- guvnoment weed. There will be gangs of them coming through Victoria Park, all in V-formation.

Wait until the boomer generation arrives with its bloated sense of entitlement. All giggly on funny fumes.

Pensioners already get their drugs free from the Ontario Drug Benefit program that also funds people on social assistance.
