I am sure this opinion will be used as evidence
In an op-ed piece published this morning in the TO Star, Thomas Walkom posits that Obama is one of theirs not ours and should be seen as such. Read it here
I see the smoking in cars debate has hotted up, perhaps got 'em all lit up [enough of that - ed] in the Nationals. Lou, of Queens Park fame, is saying that there may be a glitch in the law. Sure is - the whole bloody concept! But Port Hope Police may not enjoy their fifteen minutes of fame because of a bad law. The facts are these; a cop in PH saw a 20 year old driver smoking inside a car which had a fifteen year old girl passenger. He got the ticket even though there wasn't a kid in danger of inhaling secondhand smoke inside the car. After the car was stopped "the kid" got out and immediately lit another one that the cop couldn't do anything about. If you want to stop teenage smoking, which is another subject, you have to ban possession of ciggies to people under age - not just ban underagers from buying them. Sanity in Port Hope: A new Chair of the Port Hope Police Services Board has been elected. The existing Chair was deposed in a situation reminiscent of an old style African coup. Jeff Lees was on holiday and not at the meeting and Mayor Thomson told reporters, "Jeff thought he could be reappointed. He's a member of the Board and on vacation" Good ole Jeff, perhaps secure in his own mind failed to do basic political things, like making sure when the vote took place and having the votes in his pocket. Or perhaps he was unaware that the vote was taking place at this meeting and the others sandbagged him. Either way this is a positive move for regional policing as Jeff has been a staunch opponent of it.

My understanding from news reports is that the driver was smoking, and that once the car was stopped, the 15 year old female passenger got out an lit up. Where did you learn that the 15-year-old was the only one smoking inside the car?
Yes Wally I was wrong , the driver had a ciggie and the cop knew there was a 15 year old in the car
Love the story of the deposing of Jeff Lees. Could we try something similar in Cobourg?
What I want to know is whether Jeff Lees and Hector McMillan are really the same guy or just clones? They seem to sing from the same prayer book. Both are big guys with big mouths who seem to think they know what's best for everybody else.
So, Good ole Jeff, the tiny perfect Deputy Mayor, has, in effect, outed himself. He returns from vacation wearing a stunning out-fit loomed with the warp of hubris and the weft of nemesis. Looks good on him
Once upon a time I learned that totalitarianism is a situation where
(1)everything is prohibited except that which is permitted,
whereas a democracy is defined as a situation where
(2)everything is permitted except that which is prohibited.
Over my lifetime, I have witnessed an escalation of things that have to be controlled, curtailed, restricted, monitored, regulated, restrained, moderated, shut down, prohibited, banned. All kinds of unproductive govern mental bureaucrazies have been set up as overseers of it all. The forces of NO NO NO have infected our universities whereby students cannot display images, hold meetings, speak freely.
All done in the name of some social good, environmental good, health good, ad nauseum. Whatever happened to the days when a child could drop his popsicle on the ground, wipe it off with a dirty finger, and continue licking it to the depths of his happy little heart?
I want my childhoodlum back! Pass me that joint, please.
Hey Wally - read the item carefully. Ben wrote that a 20 year old driver was smoking in a car with a 15 year old in it. That was the fact as reported and I think you got it all screwy, n'est pas?
I made a mistake this morning too much sunshine and haven't converted from mexican time yet. If you read the story before 8.54 am Wally was right. If you read it after 8.54 am I was right. I didn't fact check aggressively enough and proofreader Wally pointed it out, I then rewrote the story and sat in a corner for ten minutes.
Last week Port Hope Police Chief Ron Hoath spoke about the savings to be had from amalgamating police services. This week Chief Hoath said that he had been ordered by the police board not to speak about police amalgamation or joint services with Cobourg. Evidently all the talking will, from now on, be done by the mayors and the CAOs.
Your "Sanity in Port Hope" remark may have been too hasty a conclusion, easily made, like a hole in water.
