Notables

First let's thank all those who made a low-key affair into a big deal just by being there. April 28th is "Labour's Day of Mourning".
The National Day of Mourning was first declared in 1984 by the Canadian Labour Congress. The date 28 April was picked because on that day in 1914, the Workers Compensation Act received its third reading. In December of 1990, this day became a national observance with the passing of the Workers Mourning Day Act. (text from wikipedia)
In Cobourg it was a struggle to get Council to adopt it as an official day and proclaim it, we never have got the flags flown at half-staff yet. Finally after years of struggle, John Lindsay managed to persuade his labour friendly colleagues, mine were not so friendly, and the Town has participated ever since. This year, although there was not an official proclamation there were wreaths from the Town and its Union CUPE 25. The population should be pleased that the Town was represented at the ceremony by the Mayor (Delanty is still on vacation) Gil Brocanier - thanks Gil.

Is this the first sign? The National Post will save money by not printing a paper for seven Mondays in the summer. Not laying people off but saving printing costs will help the beleaguered mouthpiece of the right.

I'm not sure what to make of this. A story is out this morning that the Province will contribute $84,000 to an enterprise called the "Cobourg Go Green Centre" this place will be housed in a converted store room at the LUSI office on Division St. A spokesperson says,"The small corner office will be a clearing house of information". Now I know that every bit helps but how will we know if the information centre will actually convert theory into practise? And how does the business plan convert the government money into sustainability. Don't forget we have been down this road before. One of Bob Rae's funding initiatives was a Green Information centre, I think it was called "Energreen", the name escapes me just now, fronted by Robert Sculthorpe and based in Port Hope, this office did energy audits and supplied information but was the first victim of the "Harris Revolution". Also just how effective will this office be when it fails to pass the neutrality test in the next election and the public perceives it to be a hot bed of activity for the Green party.

And who said that computers won't rule the world? They will at least find tax cheats! In an innovative use of "algorithms" (What the hell are these - maybe grandpa bill, the math whiz, will tell me) the CRA are auditing corporate tax returns to fill their mandate - recover $1000 for every hour of auditing. In ths story from the Ottawa Citizen Ottawa
• Canadians tempted to get creative with their income-tax returns might want to familiarize themselves with the work of Frank Benford before the Thursday night tax-filing deadline.Benford’s Law holds that in a series of naturally occurring numbers, the number one will appear as the first digit more often than other numbers.
So folks if you want to cheat you will be up against the mighty IBM mainframe as well as the eagle eyes of the CRA CPAs, is it worth the effort?

Happy Birthday to the PM. Today is SH's b'day - he is 50 - that's all I'm going to say but the national press has a few things to say, mainly will he be staying. Don Martin of the Calgary Herald is here and Ian McDonald of the Montreal Gazette is here. Read them

And the good news story is.......................................here

It should also be noted that the National Post is also regarded by many as the mouthpiece of the Jews.

My hat is off to you, Ben, for recognizing Dep. Mayor Gil's participation in the National Day of Mourning. It was great to see Amsden's photo of the event on the front page.
