Stockwell Day at Treasury: OH NO!
Recent news that Harper has shuffled Stockwell Day into the Treasury Board, where he will wield the knife on program cuts, has me worried. With Flaherty whispering in one ear sharing tactics learned from his former boss, Mike the Knife in Ontario, and Harper in the other reminding him of their Reform roots, this will be bad news for all the widows and orphans out there, not to mention the immigrant population, the unemployed, the homeless and anyone else too dumb to be rich in this country.
With corporate taxes and taxation of the wealthy at a historically low level in Canada, this callous government is vowing no new taxes, despite the ever growing deficit they created with their dubious stimulus programs. Announcing that beating the deficit means cutting programs exclusively, they have just eliminated a worthwhile source of revenue without a thought of the consequences.
So what sort of programs are they likely to target? Looking at where these guys come from, it's a safe bet that programs and services that protect women's health, like access to abortion, and immigrant settlement will be vulnerable; so will education, research, First Nations, poverty reduction (such as it is at the federal level), and the regulatory framework we rely on like meat inspection. That's just off the top of my head, I'm sure readers can add their own lists of potential victims of the upcoming federal cuts.
Secretly, I suspect old Stock and the boys are relishing the thought of the havoc they will wreak on Canadians when he starts waving his axe around. They probably figure having a huge deficit is worth it for the fun they will have decimating all the services and programs they hate anyway with the deficit as their ready made excuse.
And just what did they do with all that stimulus program money? Will we ever get to find out if we got what we are about to start paying for, for years to come?

I kind of like the idea of Duck-Lips Day floundering around at Treasury Board -all those Jesuit-educated bureaucrats whispering in French behind his back about his Christian fundamentalism, his wetsuit days and why it is he never made it past eighth or ninth banana in the Harper cabinet. They'll eat the poor hick alive and he won't even know it until one day his password to the can doesn't work and he ends up soiling himself in the hallway. I wouldn't worry at all; it isn't just a minority any more. First thing in March the knives will be out for Harper -just watch. This is a dead parrot. Deceased. Singing with the choir invisible. And it's tits up time for Duck-Lips -just like it is for the rest of this dreary mob. Too bad for him he didn't have the brains to say no.
Obama lama ding dong gives good speech.
This is the very first photo the White House put on its Flickr site.
Mirror, mirror on the wall,
who's the greatest prez of all?
NObama is consistent with the all-about-me-ism; just check out this video of his recent speech.
That Obama lama ding dong is all about himself as The Great One, is levelled against him by his own Democraps, ‘Well, the big difference here and in ’94 was you’ve got me.’
And the progressive dupes continue the standing O.
Wally why are you posting items about Obama on a post about Stockwell Day?
If you don't have something to say about the subject, don't post on it.
Miss Manners; I intended to post the comment below in the subject titled, "It does not pay to be a waffler."
If I had any brains whatsoever, I would have double-checked and ensured that the posting was put in its proper place. I'm a high school dropout -- what can anyone expect from a quasi-literate lout like me?
Stockwell Day. They used to make up names like this for satirical purposes.
As a matter of fact we used to have a satirical press too -Frank Magazine. That was back when people understood satire and didn't have to have things beligerently explained to them a la ranting Rick Whatsisname.
Now, for humour to sell, we need to belabour the obvious, explain the joke, telegraph the punchline. I still have a few hundred Franks around and many more Private Eyes which include the ultimate satire, by Sylvie Krin, 'Heir Of Sorrows' the sly soap opera of Chuck and Di's early days. Even though The Highway Of Heroes, for instance, seems wide open to being satirized, no one dares touch it as subject matter. Rosie DiManno, whom I love to hate, comes close in a Star article comparing Canadian soldiers rappelling down ropes to centre ice at the ACC. the ropes being a metaphore for the hanging of the Leafs. What about that grotesque photo of a few thousand fetish-clad Mounties marching beside the hearse of one of their own -a guy who served in a tropical country at taxpayer expense and got killed by a slab of falling concrete in a 7.0 earthquake. Sorry, but I see huge satire in that. The photo says volumes about unintentional humour. The endless hype of the Olympics. Need I say more? Or should I refer to Private Eye's advice columnist who ended every item with "Arentchsickofit???"
Stockwell Day is satire on a plate, a humourists dream. But who's going to touch it? Far too many Canadians actually take that fool seriously. It's our fault -not his.
BTW: The 62,000 signatures on the Highway Of Heroes Petition include those of The Marx Brothers, Osama bin-Laden and Lassie. So maybe there's still hope....
