One item from the COW meeting on Monday

There will be a motion to buy three acres of land from the landowner at the Kraft lands for the building of "the Kerr St extension" at Monday's Committee of the Whole meeting. This is a road that will eventually bisect the Town in an East-West direction and relieve traffic pressure on University Ave. It is also another bag of public money being handed over to the developer. He really is making out like a bandit on this deal! The way the report is written leads one to believe that perhaps the Town may be paying too much.

This road plan has been in the works for many years and is outlined on many Official Plans and if it is in private hands, as opposed to just being an easement on title of the Kraft deed, the land is totally useless to the owner because the Town has earmarked it for a road. The price being paid by the Town is $40,000 per acre, not bad for useless land but a little high for a road. Especially when the building of the road brings many benefits to the landowner abutting the road. The Development Charges schedule quotes the cost of the road, from William to Division, as $3,796,700 (2006 figures) the benefit to existing taxpayers is $1,852,200 a 48% - 52% split. The land in question is one third of that project

If the Kraft lands abut the road the benefit to the landowner will be immense, a guaranteed entrance to his land from a separate road, no congestion at the main gate anymore and the opportunity to open up the Northern section of his land. In this light is the rate of $40,000 an acre fair to the taxpayer when given the circumstances an argument could be made for the land to be given to the Town for increasing the value of the Kraft land?

Just a question from an overloaded taxpayer!

"relieve traffic pressure on University Avenue.'????

Am I missing something here? Are we maybe talking about the Universtity Avenue that runs from Front to Queen's Park Circle or what? WHAT godamned "traffic pressure"? The Town Of Cobourg has a population of what, 16-500 maybe? There's NO RUSH HOUR! There's NO CONGESTION! There's only 4 GODAMNED TRAFFIC LIGHTS BETWEEN WILLIAM AND DIVISION!!!!

"traffic congestion"? Ya want TRAFFIC CONGESTION? SET UP A FRIGGIN' RIB FEST WHY DONCHA! YOU'LL GET A TRAFFIC JAM CUSTOM DESIGNED BY THE ROTARY CLUB!!!!

"traffic congestion" -christalmighty, nobody contributing to this board will ever live long enough to see "traffic congestion" on University Avenue in Cobourg. This is a scam -plain and simple.

The alleged traffic jam on University West is actually caused by Slow Drivers. I am convinced our seniors and various others are frightened to drive over 40 clicks, and with all those side streets to slowly and painfully almost-stop at before turning, it is hell for those of us with somewhere to go.

Let us have our little traffic jams please, at least we don't have the stupid one lane policy on newly reconstructed Peter Street to navigate. Now that was really dumb.

After seeing Delanty quoted in a year end interview with Cecilia Nasmith when he said Cobourg's economy is in good shape, I guess Council thinks minor little expenses like this one are OK.

When you're about to gamble on operating costs for a lavish sports plex (what the Community Campus should be called), what's a paltry few hundred thousand matter anyway?

It's all to the glory of our fantasy economic recovery.

Actually I believe that kerr St is in the plan because it was always in the plan, how else to get people from an imaginary (it was when it was planned) industrial park to imaginary houses in the West End. I think the road should be called the Ken Rumball Parkway

I couldn't agree more with Deb. Peter Angelo's bizarre plan on both Peter Street and Toronto Rd. in Port Hope is a disaster in the making. Locals have taken to calling them "suicide lane" -and that'e exactly what they are. Few people, if any, understand who has the right of way. Some people use the centre lane as a passing lane. The whole thing just scares the shit out of me. Does any of it add to an orderly flow of traffic? Not that I've seen. All |I've seen is eyeballs bugging out of their sockets trying to figure out who was who and what was what. How do we get police accident reports, stats, on what the real effect has been? Well, we got rid of that dork Cannon -now we've got to get started on Angelo. Somebody must want him. I can't imagine who but there must be SOME knuckle-dragging little burg somewhere that needs a Tiny Perfect Tree-Slashing Thug to run the show when council is too stupid to do it themselves.
