A new think on it, but an old idea!
With the closing of the "Thinkers' Conference" in Montreal yesterday we should all be thinking anew. How about this for an old idea, but we should look at it again. In 2008 (source cbc) Kevin Page estimated that the additional cost of the military in Afghanistan could cost 18 Billion dollars in 2011. Well we are nearly there (2011) and due to the non-transparency of the Harperites we still don't know the real cost of the war, and we should.
But whatever the cost we should stop it. Follow Bob Fowler's observations and stop our war. Put the money back into transfer payments to the Provinces for heath-care.
We can have a "peace dividend" - let's collect it!

Call me suspicious, but I'm not holding my breath while I wait for all those soldiers to come home next year.
They may shift gears from fighting to some other fancy term like community building, but my money is on Harper caving into NATO and US pressure to stay. That will be helped along by the highway of heroes flag wavers too, who will all be shouting that old movie title "Oh what a lovely war" very loudly. Those who disagree will have to hide in their houses for fear of vigilante justice.
Warning: get those bumper stickers on your car now, before your name as a commie pacifist is written on the black list. Best to hang a large flag on your house too, just for extra insurance.

Where in God's name OR where in Hell, did you get the idea I was in favour of the war in Afghanistan? I stand on the bridge every chance I get trying to show support for the families of the soldiers who have been killed. Not to support the war. That sounds like Tory thinking. The Tory's support the war, but not the soldiers. They say they are standing behind them, but in fact they are hiding behind them! You can see that from the treatment they and their families receive from this Government. Sent over there with shoddy equipment and poorly trained. Hanging them out to dry when things don't go Harper's way.
So say what you will BUT MANY of us are on the bridges just to say to the families, we are sorry your son or daughter have died, and many of us are ashamed they have died to help further Harper's legacy.
By saying what you did, you are painting every one with the same brush, something you riled about for years when the Tories painted all those living in poverty as lazy.
Also: I have a flag flying on my house and if that pisses people off; so be it.
Doug, Doug, Doug: where did you get the idea I think you support the war? I am baffled as to how you reached that conclusion. Even if you do, that's your choice to make.
After reading your post I do agree that I should not make generalizations about those who go to the bridge. You did a good job explaining why someone who doesn't support the war would go to the bridge anyway, although to my mind just being there sends a different message than the one you have posted. But that's just me, and we both have to follow our own logic, don't we?
However, that point I will try to remember! But please allow me to generalize about tories, I have to have some fun too.
If people who have "support our troops decals" also want them to leave Afghanistan perhaps it would help if they had "quit Afghanistan" decals also.
Similarly people waving flags on the HoH could also have a placard about troop withdrawal. This way we wouldn't misunderstand their message.
"Those who disagree will have to hide in their houses for fear of vigilante justice."
Really!? Those "highway of heroes flag wavers" have such a predeliction for violence? I wonder how many of them have convictions in their past for violent acts?
Smear first, apologize later? Isn't that the policy of progressives?
Nato should get the hell out of Afghanistan. I'm weary of squandering the blood of our precious Western youth for a retrograde culture.
"Arabs emerged from the deserts in order to conquer, not to learn."
In Tuesday's Tor Star there are two articles on the subject of Canada leaving Afghanistan. One is titled "Hillary Clinton Stirs the Pot on Afghanistan..." and the other says "Full Afghanistan withdrawal wrong, top tory says".
Reading each article it is clear my earlier assertion has some basis. We may stop fighting there, but we'll still be there alright.
Neither the black cats nor the white ones (Libs and Tories) are about to get off that particular bandwagon anytime soon.

Baffled? Indeed you are!
