Ooooops the Town of Port Hope is basically bankrupt. Its expenses outweigh its revenues, but who cares? Obviously nobody on the Finance Committee. If the Town is running an eight million dollar overdraft there is something wrong in Denmark!
So the next question is - how do they get out of this and what kind of a repayment plan is going to be constructed? What a horrible piece of timing this is. It sets up all kinds of TeaParty candidates and will be fun to watch.

I'll hazzard a guess and say just about every Ward 1 council member -Lees, Turck, O'Hara, Watts- each of whom said on their campaign literature "I was born in Port Hope and I've lived here all my life" are all of the Conservative persuasion. And it's pretty much a given that's where Linda Thompson's heart lies too. So what can we expect from this dismal, dreary bunch now? Well, given their childlike Happy Face 'Let's Have A Parade!' mentality I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see them troop in 9-year olds with jars full of pennies for a Pay Down The Deficit photo-op just like Conservative buffoon Garth Turner did when he was Mulroney's Revenue Minister. "Fiscally Conservative" is an oxymoron -'moron' and 'Conservative' being the key derivatives in that sentence. On the national level it's a fake lake and $87,000 worth of junk mail in one riding alone -ours. On the Provincial it's 7 dead in Walkerton and a bill we'll never stop paying to make sure it doesn't happen again. Locally it's a dorky %12-million Taj Mahal addition to Town Hall nobody wanted, a dorky Taj Mahal Works Department facilitie at the top of Victoria Street, a $50,000 Harbour Master with no harbour to look after, councillors bringing their own lawyers to council on a regular basis, Parking Control Officers apparently dedicated to running tourists out of town on weekends, a CAO with no CAO designation, everybody and their brother hiring everybody else's brother and did I say "I'd hazzard a guess" well, with these inbred dolts running this town it might as well be hazzard all right -Hazzard County complete with Boss Hogg in a dress and them Duke Boys out-running the cops every time.
Yep, here we are. The highest taxes of any municipality in Ontario -and the lowest house prices in the GTA and the only sound is the sucking wind of industry getting the hell out while Thompson and the gang amass vacant land at exhorbitant prices for -ready?- an industrial park. God love 'em.
If it weren't so pathetic in Port Hope you'd just have to laugh. And the best laughs are still every Tuesday night on the second floor of 55 Queen Street. That is, of course, if you like slapstick....
If anyone on that council is re-elected then we get what we deserve. Apparently you have to be 'qualified' to sit on the hospital board, but certainly not to run Port Hope.
It's high time that the people of Port Hope demanded better.
One more thing: Everything in Port Hope is about accessability. Accessability, accessability, accessability. Accessability above all else, accessability at any cost, accessibility whether anybody needs it or not.
Accessability is a mantra around here. The ultimate motherhood smokescreen designed to make you think the knuckle-draggers running the show are actually doing something. No one can speak out about accessability or question the cost any more than anyone could question the benefits of breast feeding or proper dental hygene. Curbs are cut at huge expense without regard for the purpose of curbs and why they're there, public doorways widened, elevators installed. You'd think that by now we'd be seeing wheelchair traffic jams on Walton Street -but we're not. And we never will. There just aren't that many disabled people in town. Christ -there aren't that many disabled people in Ontario to justify this kind of insanity. But never underestimate the political power of a feel-good initiative. And in Port Hope with soma like this flowing out of Town Hall -everybody feels good!

This is completely off-topic, but in relation to Merklin's mention of the insane amount of money wasted by Norlock's office on mail-outs.
I received THREE (3) of the same mailout in the last few weeks. This is 'shame you into feeling patriotic' b.s. that Norlock sends out every year. Has anyone else received this in multiple? Is it a Canada Post error, or one made by Slick Rick's office.

You know it's just not fair really is it, that I go on and on about what I perceive to be the shortcomings of Port Hope council. There has to be balance, doesn't there? So before I start sounding like some cranky old broken record let me give credit where credit is due: If it were not for Mayor Linda Thompson and THIS Port Hope Council, Port Hope may never have had an Official Hymn.
What a friend we have in local government to give us What A Friend We Have In Jesus as our Official Hymn. And thank God this council answered the prayers of the taxpayers and enacted such important legislation. Otherwise what would we have done in order to satisfy our clamouring need for an Official Hymn?
In other posts I have crucified this council; now, seeing the error of my ways, I personally roll aside the boulder and beseach them to rise from the (brain) dead.
Let's have a parade. Lay some wreaths maybe. Fingerprint some 8-year olds at the Mall. Maybe even a Sidewalk Sale where we can get rid of all the crap we otherwise can't get rid of.

The only decision it seems Linda Thompson can make it send items to staff or committees for a report. Sometimes the committees she sends these items to for study are not mandated to prepare such a report.
This council, lead by Mrs Thompson, has done nothing but lead this community into debt. They also have rubber backbone. They shift in the wind like the god-awful new Municipal Flag atop Town Hall. They purchased land (probably over-valued) for a new industrial park that they can't seem to find any industry for. A brand new bus that runs until 9pm with no passengers.
We have a perfectly good community health centre that has space for out-patient rehab and a full-diabetes clinic. Why has no one from Port Hope Council said anything publically about lobbying the Province for more funding so that these services could be provided in Port Hope?
They get caught up in seeing themselves on American TV and rent out the town for weeks on end with no regard for shopkeepers or their employees, or the rest of us schmucks who have to wait for a break in the "action" to go to the bank. All for what?
All this while our water rates go up 125% and taxes continue to be amongst the highest in Ontario. What HAS she done other than make us take it where we don't want it with a smile on our face.
We have few options in Port Hope. Deputy King Jeff's ego needs a check and he'd just continue to run us into the ground with O'Hara et al in tow. William Spotton has been outed as a flake. Robert Chatten is unknown and is at the very least unpolished. John Floyd has all but declared his position, but has had no success in the last decade. To the last poster regarding John's conflict of interest - he has already had the Madison St. project green-lighted. The suggestion that John Morand might run makes me laugh, but also nauseated.

Maybe this council failed Grade-9 math class. Listen UP team the ships sinking! Fix It NOW. You have the elected responsibility to the public to be open, transparent and accountable for ALL of your actions. Your failures will be measured up in October. This town cannot afford another 4 years of this fiscal math failures. Get Real. Stop Hiding.

Why call John Floyd. A SOB? First of all he certainly is not short of breath. 2nd he is the local president of the Port Hope Lions. Third he was recognized as a citizen of the year.
