Perusing the list of names on the Town of Coboug's website page that shows the names of filed candidates, we have a person called Jerry Ford. Nothing in the MSM yet, how does this person expect to get noticed if there is no publicity? Ditto with Wayne DeVeau. He has put his name forward but some people do know who he is, probably not as many as he thinks there are!
So go to it folks - if you intend to run filing your name is not enough, we have to know who you are.
Met John Floyd today, he tells me that he will be announcing his candidacy for the Mayor's spot in Port Hope, at his house on August 25th. That's only eight weeks before the voting day - not much time but the big difference with John is that he has been running for Mayor for the past twelve years since the last time he ran.

Bad move declaring early. NorthumberlandToday.com will not print any letters-to-the-editor from declared candidates -deeming such letters to be free advertising. Somebody ought to take this up with the Ontario Press Council since incumbents show up in the letters section on a regular basis. Cal Morgan in Port Hope is an excellent example.
Both papers around here are pretty sick examples of what a newspaper is supposed to be. One is an annoying, snowblower clogging, 3-day-a-week giveaway, the other a sort-of subscription but one-day-a-week snowblower clogging giveaway with two old men columnists who write about their gout and their cats respectively.
Actually, the Northumberland News is the second best newspaper in Ontario, Merklin. It has the industry hardware to prove it.
Just because you'd rather be pissed off about everything doesn't mean the News doesn't deliver damn good journalism every week, unlike its competitor.

Northumberland Today May 12 published a column written by poetaster, Grahame Woods, wherein he regaled the readership of this community about his early car ownershit days in another community. I sent this letter-to-the-editor which was rejected.
This was the opening line: Northumberland Today continues to be a dumpster for bloated mediocrity.

Went onto his website to check it out, and after a great deal of clicking, found a little, but not much of substance.
He doesn't even list the Victoria Park issue as a concern, and while he claims money was wasted on public transit, he doesn't tell us how much, or why, or provide a solution.
He wants to increase the boundaries of the Town to increase the tax base, but clearly hasn't been around long enough to know the Hamilton Township crowd will never agree to that.
They're so allergic to paying taxes their Council was recently forced to close two local bridges after failing to repair them for years now. Those guys all work in Cobourg but they're not about to contribute to it in any way.
Mr. Ford talks extensively about his background in accountancy and business but has little to say about bringing new enterprises to town or countering growing unemployment.
I certainly agree with his comments about the new hockey arena pretend community centre, but didn't see any ideas to get funding for the pool it needs.
His expertise on disability and non profit issues are welcome, and should provide a different perspective than we have now with most Councillors.
Altogether, he's off to a reasonable start and has clearly put a lot of thought into his not quite fully developed positions. Looking forward to hearing more from this new candidate.

A rare glimpse as well into those who like yourself, with nothing original to say, leap to the ramparts of the ad hominem attack. I'm left to imagine that you're currently resting on your financial laurels having cashed the Harper Government cheques issued for your fine work on Richard Colvin.
What else can I imagine? Plenty actually. Especially if you choose to duck, cover, run, hide, malign, disguise and distort in the manner of your political masters.

I glad john is going to run . He knows what is going on if he was elected mayor before port hope would not be in the shape it is now. With the goof's they have now.
As for running into John Floyd (something which happens to myself with disturbing regularity)I find myself conflicted as to his candidacy -something I've discussed with him on many occassions so I'm sure he won't be surprised in the least to see it in print on The Burd Report.
Fist, he should run for council -not for mayor. Port Hope is run by an Old Girls Club -two of whom were actually elected, but they're only there to do what the real power in this burg tells them to do. Linda Thompson, to the regret of many, is practically a shoe-in. She's the worst thing to happen to this town (to say nothing of democracy) since the 1980 Flood.
Mr. Floyd has to disavow himself of any Conservative leanings he may cling to. Dump the party, dump the web-site references, dump anything and everything that relates to the political poison known as Conservatism. Conservatism is backward, anti-progressive, and small tent. Dump it, John.
Dump the silly 'Pink Floyd' nonsense too.
He needs to get off that godamned Harley and start walking around town wearing a T-shirt that reads 'Floyd's Running!'
His ideas on the sham of the Harbour appropriation are dead on and he needs to embarass the federal hucksters who, with the help of Linda Thompson and her Ace Henchman, Eugene Todd, are going right along with the worst deal since Manhattan and $24 worth of trinkets. We Port Hopers are the hapless Indians in this deal and John Should be riding to the rescue by whatever means.
He should be gathering momentum by now through team-building and consensus -but I don't see it happening. And that disappoints me because I truly believe John has a lot to offer. Certainly a lot more than anyone currently taking up space on the elite side of the wooden railing right now.

Just what does Merklin Muffley see when s/he looks in the mirror?
Merklin derides others for hiding while taking great care to reveal nothing of self, under the guise of a pseudonym. That's as bizarre as it gets, folks.
As for Merklin remaining anonymous in her own way, that's fine, but don't pee all over those that do their own thing here, if credibility is at all important.
Anyone who has been around this place for more than a few weeks and knows a little about the recent political history of Port Hope knows who Merklin Muffley is.

Oh GOD, Anon...please try to follow along! Mr. Muffley has said it a hundred times and I'm afraid he's going to burst a gasket if people don't please READ CAREFULLY. Mr. Muffley's problem is NOT whether or not you identify yourself with your real name or something else, so long as it is NOT anonymous. YOU can remain anonymous, but do not use the anonymous option when you "choose your identity." Please come up with something unique to identify yourself. You can identify yourself as ANON1 if you want to, or anything you choose. His preferred option is that you sign up for a FREE google account (which I have recently done myself. It took less than 30 seconds).
Mr. Muffley, I know you have said this over and over and I'm sure I have not said it as eloquently as you have, but it seemed that it was necessary to reiterate. Obviously some people need these things BEATEN INTO THEIR THICK SKULLS.
it appears that one of the severely aggravating factors in this debate is the lag times that happen when our moderator has more pressing and immediate priorities (and rightly so) to attend to. This sometimes results in comments that respone to earlier points and making new points sometimes get posted after other comments that have obviously been submitted in between but did not get published before the seemingly out-of-touch comments get posted later.
I have found myself commenting on a subject which, before it was even published, had been rendered completely redundant by another poster's comment that had also not yet been published, making for some confusing and nonsensical reading when everything finally appeared in 'print'.
I'm not criticizing Ben for this glitch, but explaining why some comments just seem to be totally loopty-loop at times.
This will be eliminated in the new setup there will be a forum that does not need constant moderation

A comment has been made that Hamilton Township would not approve of Cobourg's expansion, so who needs their approval? The question is not whether or not we should annex, the real question is how much should we annex. It is time for people living in the township while working in and otherwise benefiting from the proximity to Cobourg to get off the fence and start making a contribution.
If the entire township was incorporated into Cobourg we would have a population density and area per capita that is roughly the same as Port Hope.
Deb O takes me to task for not commenting on the Victoria Park situation, and that is because it is a no-brainer. We have good rules on the books, tell the town staff to enforce them! We are a grown up community, we don't need to use the province as an excuse for not doing something.

At least he identifies himself. There are a number of incomprehensible comments from one Anonymous who, I happen to know, is a candidate in another jurisdiction. The best thing I can say about that is that he is consistantly incomprehensible. And, of course, consistancy is important in a politician, isn't it?
Mr Ford's primary issue seems to be cleaning the sidewalks at the tax layers expense. I wonder what demographic he. Is appealing to??
