A few notes, because I have time

A trip away does put things in perspective and bring new insights.
For example we, in North America have been bludgeoned by the fast food industry that large signs and a standardised building formula are absolutely essential for corporate existence. If that's the case why do the Italians put these stores in heritage buildings and mandate small signs?

The lists are now sealed let the games begin! The number of people wanting to be a councillor is the lowest in years and Stan Frost has been acclaimed as Deputy Mayor, this demonstrates a huge disinterest in the election. With the Town going to 'wired' elections only nobody knows, and one can only guess, the actual voter turnout. The only winner in this move is the company running the election being paid per vote!

Publication of the BR will resume on Sunday, we can't wait to peruse the last two weeks headlines and start to comment.

Your readers are equally looking forward to your perusal of the headlines and what will hopefully become a discussion about the various municipal elections.

For instance, what's up with the mayoral race in Cobourg? It's like musical chairs with Martin Partridge dropping out at virtually the same time as Manfred Schumann dropped in. Both big surprises, at least to me.

Now we have Partridge running for a council seat along with several other new aspirants, including one of the female persuasion.

Having received a flyer from Forrest Rowden this week, I grabbed it with great interest to see what his positions are and what he has to offer Cobourg.

Answer: nothing. His flyer lists all his past accomplishments and that's fine, but it stops there. I need a better reason to vote for somebody besides their past. This voter is looking for new ideas and new thinking, not the same old white guy politics as usual.

This might prove interesting after all, and for the best entertainment I predict Big Hec will be emiting lots of fireworks in his campaign to keep the mayor's job in Trent Hills.

Already a voter has complained that contender Bob Fudge, now on Port Hope Council, isn't a Trent Hills person. Funny, the same newspaper story says Fudge lives in Trent Hills, leading me to wonder just what it takes to become one of them.

So c'mon home Ben and get this party started.

Deb, the musical chairs are easy to explain. I was in Belleville last Thursday evening at an event and quite coincidentally someone I had barely met (not from Cobourg) mentioned that she had heard that Manfred Schumann wanted to enter the Cobourg mayoral race. So I kept an eye on it on Friday as the nomination deadline approached. Sure enough, Manfred filed his papers late in the morning. His decision split my vote somewhat, making what was already an uphill fight even tougher for me. Also, earlier in the week I had been picking up a lot of comments that I should have aimed for Councillor rather than leaping into the race for the top job. So, at 1:45 pm on the last day, I decided to let Manfred have a straight run at Gil, and seek a Councillor position hoping to have a voice and a vote at that level. Subsequently, many are now saying that they will find it easier to vote for me as a Councillor than as an untried Mayor. I think I made the right decision, not just for myself but for the situation generally.

That's a very candid comment, Martin. Thanks for sharing that.

Seems to me that Gil's challenge will be a bit easier now as a result of this switcheroo. Time will tell.

Meanwhile your new challenge should be easier for you too. Certainly as a general rule it's considered better to have a term or two as a councillor under your belt before aiming higher. Decorum and all that.

Now hit the ground running and let everybody know your ideas for this fine old town, I'm looking forward to hearing about them.

LOL, I do take the 'candid' part of 'candidate' quite seriously.

I must say I was evenly split between between Martin & the Brocodile. I knew Gil for solid. But when I learned how instrumental Martin was in acquiring the old Chateau property to square the park, that won a pile of credit. Victoria Park means a lot to me, and Martin realized something I had long hoped for.

But then Martin posted his Victoria Park proposal and lost any chance for my vote as mayor.

I so hoped that he would run for councilor. Now that he has, he has my vote. Martin is tenacious, ambitious, and proven effective.

We bumped into each other in Victoria Hall when he was preparing papers to officialy change direction, while I was turning in my papers to be able to vote.

I would have enjoyed a coffee banter with him, but paperwork prevailed, especially when there are deadlines involved.

Hi Ben

Drove through Campbellford to-day. Dozens and dozens of King Hec. yellow and red signs. Looks like lots of support, but there is one sign with the same colours as Hectors that boldly says VOTE FOR HIGHER TAXES. Guess not every one is a fan.

Got a flyer today from Gil Brocanier, mayoral candidate. Looks great, and the entire thing is devoted to his plans, detailed plans, for Cobourg.

Contrasted to Forrest Rowden's flyer with its litany of what he has done, this flyer is exactly what voters need to see so they can make informed decisions.

Candidates: get a Gil flyer and model your own efforts on that. You can't do better if you truly have a vision, and plans, for our future in Cobourg.

Only downside was nothing about the Park. I'm sure that the people who go the All Candidate Meetings will make sure nobody gets to sit on the fence on that one. Might as well come clean now.

Question: "How many minor, intermediate & major events can we ask Victoria Park to bear?"
