Only in Cobourg - more details later

Only in Cobourg can a smug electorate claim to have created change by voting two new faces the top two vote getters. Only in Cobourg can the last placed councillor claim a resounding electoral success when it is pointed out to him the the opposition only lost by 500 votes in the top two races and the incumbent councillors were relegated to the bottom of the pecking order. Only in Cobourg can we claim change when the nothing changes - the two new faces may have topped the polls but they are powerless.

The other shoe will drop when it becomes apparent just how entrenched the cronyism is when the council responsibilities are doled out. My prediction - the newcomers will get low level assignments.

As you can see by the tone of these comments I am not impressed. Nor dare I say are 45% of the voters. The perspective is simple Mayor Delanty only won by 500 votes over his combined opposition. To claim a resounding victory when he is only supported by a slim margin is disingenuous. For this Council to assume that it is business as usual is dangerously arrogant. They should be chastened but listening to the deaf person speak - Mr MacCaughey - they haven't learnt that just under half of the folks voted against this team.

More to come

Tob bad Ben, YOUR cronies and playmates (ie. Manfred) didn't get in so once again you whine.

Voter turnout was actually higher than in the last election and still wasn't high enough to unseat the sitting councillors.

The perspective is indeed simple: Delanty enjoys ~ 54% of the total votes for mayor while none of his competition could scrape together more than 25% a piece.

It was the dearth of quality candidates that made the difference for council in this (and in past) elections.

As well voters did not always fully complete their ballots. How else do you explain 6995 total ballots votes for mayor and only 5904 for councillor (based on number of total votes / number of candidates in race).

Of course I whine, about the absloute arrogance of the incumbents, their inability to take any kind of message from this result except to crow "We won!"

The point is that Mayor Delanty only won by 500 votes over the people who didn't vote for him, surely he must think that something is not quite right?

Your point about voter turnout is erroneous, the voter turnout only returned to a point higher than last time but still less than the time before, no big turnout there!

Why such the big deal about the new faces ... It is quite clear the voters wanted the incumbents back and the only reason we see two new faces is that someone had to voted in! There were only two empty spots to fill. It's not like Stan or Miriam took anyones place ... they simply filled the void left by others leaving. Winds of change ....Hah!!!

My point exactly and when you consider the numbers of people that voted for the opposition it is very hard for the incumbents to claim a clear victory and they must think about the lack of support that the numbers indicate and act accordingly, i.e. lose the arrogance and start to listen.
