What's in it for the Bloc?

As critics have pointed out the Bloc are considered to be traitors to the cause of Canada because their 'raison d'etre' is Quebec's independence. But that is not all they want as political goals. It stands for progressive (read left leaning) policies. In all of the debates I have seen Duceppe has hammered both the Libs and Cons for the mess that the EI system is in - only 30% of those paying in ever qualify, fund is in surplus yet benefits have been cut, differing qualifying rules for different regions and the list goes on. He wants to reform that for Quebecers not for an independent state that could not afford its own EI. He stands for workers' rights. On the whole the Bloc is against most of the Tory positions. Calling them traitors may be semantically correct but practically wrong at this time.

So in signing a timed contract will be a restraint on the Bloc because the Quebecers will not forgive anybody who makes the situation worse.

I am an optimist!

Dion's political career is based on his perpetual opposition to the Bloc. Dion received the lowest vote for his party in 100 years. Even his own Party doesn't want him. The legacy of the Liberals has been opposition to a political party that has zero interest in the welfare of Canadians as a whole. What would Trudeau think of his party's legacy. And then we have Trudeau's son approving of the lip-lock with anti-Canadians. And all that Burd can come up with is a single policy initiative to white-wash the Bloc. Of course the Bloc doesn't speak white -- it speaks pur laine, which Burd considers to be palatable. How about consulting the Canadian people whether they want a steady diet of pea soup politricks?

I agree completely with Ben's reasoning in his comments about the Bloc. The quest for separation has largely been abandoned, and if Quebecers want to be called a Nation as our current Prime Minister so decreed, that's fine with me. I just want them to remain part of our country, and if they need special status to be content with us Anglos, then so be it.

Can't quarrel with their progressive policies, and especially on poverty issues they have impressed me very much.

Vive la Quebec and Vive la Canada!

Wally, that doesn't dispute the fact that Dion is the leader of the Official Opposition and Stephen Harper is leading a minority government. Deal with it. People act like Harper won with a massive majority and his MPs are being wiped off the face of the earth. And these same people say Liberals are arrogant, wow.

Dion is an idiot. This was demonstrated when the Liberal party earned the most resounding defeat in Canadian history. Canadians spoke and they said Dion was repulsive to them. Combine all the votes that the NDP, Bloc and Conservatives received, and the rejection of Dion in any regard is virtually unanimous. Yep, Dion is the leader of the opposition. Even his own party doesn't want him.

You still haven't refuted the fact that they have the numbers, in terms of seats and popular support, no matter what happened in the last election and your personal views of Dion.

Unfortunate for you, we're not adding up the NDP, Bloc and Conservative votes but that of the NDP, Bloc and the Liberals.

If Harper didn't blunder in the first place and give reason for the opposition parties to join up this wouldn't have happened. Who responds to an economic crisis by trying to gut the opposition? Oh, right ...

You can make all the pejorative comments about Harper & the Conservatives that you wish. I have been advised that this blog will not tolerate pejorative comments about the so-called coalition.
