Here's a part of the tree that is going to be carved up. And as commentator Doug suggests one may be able to see a face in the tree already. Not a big face and not one of the Virgin Mary holding a baby Jesus, but if it brings in tourists why not suggest it.
One brilliant Cobourg wit recently told me their opinion of the Committee's likely selection, "They will want some beer can chewing missing tooth neandrathal chainsaw the tree into a living lawnchair. Or some organic dweb who only uses washable toilet paper will needlepoint it into cuteness with birds and animals."
WOW! Yeah, I can see the face. Plain as day. But it isn't the virgin what's-her-name or the kid either. I't Dave Brubeck. Look, right there in the burl. It's Dave Brubeck sitting at a Steinway Baby Grand about to let loose with Take 5!
Come to think of it, all the Horton's Hare-Brains that come up with this sick nonsense might want to take five too.
It's a tree. They have a life span, just like every other living thing. Cut it down and be done with it. Honestly, you Cobourg people are never satisfied with leaving well enough alone.
Ben, I thought I would see you comment on the two recent letters to the NT editor about the plaque for the 26 Canadian Ordinance Depot and the suggestion that it be relocated. The people making this suggestion do not seem to realize that (1) the plaque is where it is because that's where the Depot was, (2) that whole area is still referred as "The Depot" by Cobourg people who have been here for a long time, and, (3) it will soon be more or less across the road from a buzzing site -- the new CC. Didn't you come to Canada to work ordinance there?
No I didn't come to work at the Depot - Winchester, but i have a great affiliation for the plaque being fourth generation military. Perhaps relocating might be a good idea as the herotage does get lost rather like the cairn that the Queen erected. Maybe all of the local significantly heritagy thingys should go together in Vic Park that place seems to be being treated as a focal point.
Perhaps an "Heritage Guide Booklet and Map" could be created and distributed to everyone, both locals and visitors. We don't take heritage matters seriously enough, on the broad scale of popular interests. To a significant extent, it seems to be relegated to a tourism-focused item. Home-grown pride is waning as the town grows through an inflow of new residents rather than a 'locally grown' population. Such an information item could help to restore or generate some of it.
