A response to the whine of the year

from Wally Keeler a keen observer of all things

According to Cobourg resident, Anita Steins, there is a "beach fiasco" of "epic proportions." Her letter-to-the-editor of Northumberland Today ended with her assertion that, "I too would like to enjoy our beach at least once this year." If she has not been on the beach once this year, how could she know there is any situation on the beach other than via Pete Fisher's smear-job journalism.

Many in 'Corktown' have wide boulevards between curb and sidewalk. It could easily be widened to provide ease of parking and permit emergency vehicles clear access on the very, very few days in the year when parking is stressed. Beach safety is enhanced by moving the lifeguard chairs forward and adding a few extra lifeguards for the very, very few days in a year when crowds necessitate it.

This is the part of Ms Stein's letter that I find particularly offensive. "Those who come here to enjoy our free beach rarely are the kind who spend any money here. They have their day, ignore our laws, leave their trash and go home."

I recall those endless summer days of hippies hitch-hiking across Canada. Occasionally, some rolled out a sleeping bag in the park/beach. Bigots-of-the-day smeared them: hippies were unwashed, smelly, girls had hairy armpits and legs, ignore laws and convention, leave their garbage and move on to pollute the next community. The Cobourg Sentinel-Star's letters page was a display case of this distasteful attitude. The slanders, smears, and sneers against visiting hippies (really, just teenagers with long hair) had two wonderful defenders.

The publisher of the Cobourg Sentinel-Star, Foster Meharry Russell, wrote a wonderful editorial about observing some hippies with a small campfire glowing on the beach. In the morning he returned, and observed that the hippies had cleaned up their spot, placed the camp debris in a bin, and moved on to enjoy their land, Canada. He extolled their freedom.

When the issue of sleep-overs in the park came to town council, Deputy-Reeve, Lenah Field Fisher, a fabulous suffragette who wore extravagant hats, extolled the virtues of sleeping under the stars on warm nights. She referred to the dirty Thirties when the homeless unemployed sometimes slept overnight in the park on their quest for employment.

I live one block away from Victoria Park. I enjoy its presence in my life almost every day, any time of day. The Park/Beach is open 24 hours 365 days a year. The Park is crowded 10-15 days in a year, less than one percent of the year. Why are the few selfish self-centred Cobourgers so resentfully tight-fisted of sharing Cobourg's greatest asset.

Local resident, Steven MacLaughlin in his letter-to-the-editor called for action, "Our park and beach both stink with garbage and outsiders and it is time to clean it up!" Bigotry is the cause of the foul smell and it needs a major disinfectant.

All weekend I strolled through the park, and witnessed extended families from grandma on down to tots, enjoying themselves and each other, laughing, playing games, bonding as a family. How many homegrown Cobourgers take their extended families to the park on the other 350 days of the year?

Many of these 'visitors' came from countries where life is stressed with too lethal consequences. It is a hardship of which most Canadians are unfamiliar. Immigrants have a great resource - their kids. Canada gets their kids. In the meantime, many immigrants take low level jobs, work hard, live in apartments/condos, and deserve to enjoy Canada's freedom and prosperity.

The presence of these visitors in Canada's free parks is part and parcel of their assimilation into our society. These new Canadians make me feel good. I enjoy the smells of their cooking. I enjoy the extravagant glee of their tumbling children. I enjoy that I can witness this in a feel good country, a feel good town and a feel good Park.

Shame on Northumberland Today's hyperbolic exploitation of NOTHING. Were there any picnic tables broken or garbage bins tipped over? Were any lamp posts toppled or broken? Bushes and flowers uprooted? Were there any brawls? In the absence of any this, why would Northumberland Today amplify the message, "Heads should roll"?

I couldn't resist. It's under 'Coloured-types Running Amok In Cobourg":

Wally is bang on. I Liked what he wrote. This is racism, pure and simple, wrapped in a layer of sanctimonious rhetoric by the town and the old timers.

Excellent response!

I don't understand. Is your point that just because picnic tables were not broke or garbage bins tipped, that everything is okay?

Much less happened in the park, yet dimwits referred to a "beach fiasco" of "epic proportions" and called; "heads should roll." Get a sense of proportion

Finally an excellent article- thank you Ben Burd, As a Cobourger it is embarassing to have this racism going on. I would love to have my whole family get together for a bbq on a weekend, however we only seem to get to gether for weddings and funerals.

I read over the article posted in the Northumberland Today a few times. Please explain to me how it is racist?

I recently had a conversation with a woman who said she has been in Cobourg for two years:

She asked "did you see the beach in the weekend?"
I replied "Yes, it is good to see people enjoying themselves"
She "Oh, it is too multicultural for me"
Me: "I though you came from Toronto"
She: " Yes, but I came here to get away from all the different types of people".

I find it disheartening to discover that Cobourg is being seen as a refuge for people who cannot keep up with life and accept people of a different colour.
I hope Cobourg does not attract bigots in the way that South America attracted Nazis after WW2.

Perhaps the town department that promotes relocation to Cobourg should explain that our devotion to historic architecture does not extend to accepting Victorian attitudes about other races.

Greg H, that is one example of the approximately 20,000 Cobourg residents.

While I am in general agreement with the gist of Ben's tirade, I'm afraid I do draw the line at his idea of getting rid of the boulevards to accommodate more parking. The boulevards down many of Cobourg's streets are part of the town's charm. If we want to provide access to the beach for more people, then arrange parking elsewhere - perhaps in one of the school parking lots that are unused in the summer, and provide a jitney service to and from the beach.

Darn! Where'd I leave the dope? I can't for the life of me figure out one 'anonymous' from another 'anonymous' and which 'anonymous' is taking a stand for or against which other 'anonymous' no matter how hard I try. On the whole I feel, well, anonymous in the whole argument, unable to join in because I'm not anonymous.

So, in short and with all due respect to the many and varied 'anonymous-es" posting here -FUCK RIGHT OFF AND DIE FOR CHRIST SAKE!

If you fucking dullards can't figure out how to get a godamned Google ID -ask a fucking 10-year old or just shut the fuck up. Your multi-identity arguments are utterly worthless unless unless we have SOME FUCKING POINT OF REFERENCE AS TO WHO EXACTLY IS MAKING THEM.

(Thank you all kindly for your attention to this important and timely reminder. Carry on.)

Where was Pete Fisher to take the natives' side in 1750 when the ancestors of the Green Street crowd arrived? Geez, they didn't just steal the beach and litter it with trash -they brought disease and liquor too. Personally, I think the new Scarborough landing party ought to clear out the godamned paleface English-accented squaters who had no right to be here in the first place.

(BTW -how come Toronto never complains when Cobourgers leave their trash at a Blue Jays game? Just wondering....)

Yes, it was the comment of just one person, but it summarizes quite well dozens of comments that I have personally heard. Most people seem to be surprisingly open about their racist feelings.

Gail
I did not write this post, but do agree with the sentiments.

Merklin,

Wow! Please get some help. Normal people do not act like that. I feel bad for you, you must have some serious issues. Please deal with them before you harm yourself or others.

Dear Merklin,
Your mouth should be washed out with soap. Maybe people can't say who they are for various reasons. really what difference does it make - stick with the point.

Canada is a free Country and we can go where ever we want. including the beach in Cobourg.

Just curious if anyone has heard opinions from either of the candidates for Mayor about the issue?

Nice to see that the ranting has returned.
I added a comment on someone else's blog about this comical farce and yet again was told to "go back to where I came from and to leave us alone."
As I do live within a couple of blocks from the beach, I do agree that it was busy. This is one weekend of possibly four in the entire year that gets like this. And the locals cannot use their precious beach ?? Come on... If you have been following some of my posts(@deannop) throughout the year I clearly define that the beach is hardly ever used by anyone. As I have walked that very beach almost daily since September, I know this to be not an exaggeration.
Tsk tsk tsk... racism... alive and healthy in a town being left behind.

Merkly Jerkley cussed, "the godamned paleface English-accented squaters who had no right to be here in the first place."

History.
I'm here.
I'm stayin'.
It's my right.
It's right now.

To Armchair QB and others, please be assured that I will express a clear opinion on this issue well before voting starts on October 18. Please continue the dialogue with me either directly at birdpart@eagle.ca or here.

As with most complex issues, in formulating my recommendations to the voters I will balance my own personal experiences and initial ideas with what I hear from the public during the next month or so.

Incidentally, I have been trying to let people know that I have a family commitment that I must attend to over the next little while. My campaign will then begin in earnest.

Merklin,

you are seriously retarded. I have been reading this blog for ages, and all I ever seen in your comments is a constant stream of ignorance and profanity. You ride on the tail coats of those who are clearly more intelligent then yourself.

Maybe I don't always agree with Wally or Ben or Gail, but at least their arguments are well thought out and presented and you can have some real respect for that.

So, perhaps you should be the one to "FUCK OFF AND DIE", as you said.

In terms you will understand, since typing in proper English seems to be beyond you:

No one cares what you think. You're a crude individual. Grow a brain. Maybe if you lost your attitude and profane language (that means swearing in case you didn't know) people would respect and value your opinions instead of rolling their eyes whenever we see you've commented.

Sheesh, Merk, I used to earn that same reaction to some of my wordstews. Just rinse and repeat.

Ben:

I have been thinking or some time that the "Anonymous" contributions are often confusing, add little to the blog and are annoying, as is this last example.

Surely anybody could think of an original name.

Can we have a trail period where "anonymous"
contributions are banned ?

deanno said...

I hate that, in this time of reason, that I have to involve myself in this lack of intolerance. And then I wonder how the ones that do post intelligent forward thinking thoughts in this blog have had the ability to live here for so long.

I find it disturbing that a local newspaper gives good front page to cheap yellow journalism, accompanied by an op-ed mash of pettimess of banality-boner proportions written by that bloated bland-gland impressario, the one-&-lonely emergency-vehicle-stringer extraordinaire:PETE FISHER.

nobody's twisting deanno's arm to stay, seeing as how this is so beneath him. their must be some other second rate town that needs straightening out that would welcome old deanno with open arms. can't say you'll be missed, but don't take it personnaly.

deanno said...

No need to worry friendly fire guy. The Burd Report is always accessible and I do like interacting with the community here.

Thank You for this! We could use a little more of the good family values I see at the park,,,,,,families out together at all generations and ages enjoying thier families favourite foods, games and fun, that is what a public park is for,,,,,,wish I saw more of my fellow cobourgians with their families enjoying what we have to offer.....and lets not forget the ever fragile retail economy in dire need of visitors as the locals head to big box stores. We need life in our downtown, we have life in our downtown and waterfront area, yes it gets a little crowded on long weekends and beautiful saturday afternoons.....and thank goodness for that. I have taken pictures for these visitors while walking by and have served them at a local restaurant...they like Cobourg....lets give them a chance!

Hey Merklin Muffley I was about to set myself up a blogger ID then saw your post. Why be so ignorant, the idea is to encourage free speech. Everyone has a right to an opinion and now I am not setting up my account so everyone can know who I am because who the heck are you to tirade like that? Anyway could have been a good arguement if it had been an intelligent one.

If a few people want to share like a mafia their opinion, why can't they telephoned to each other ? This is a free country. I don't give a rat's ass if they don't like my anonymous status. Interesting to read who red neck some are.

A week and half later, Northumberland Today published this article aka letter to the editor. Interestingly they omitted this paragraph:

"Local resident, Steven MacLaughlin in his letter-to-the-editor called for action, "Our park and beach both stink with garbage and outsiders and it is time to clean it up!" Bigotry is the cause of the foul smell and it needs a major disinfectant."

"Bigotry is the cause of the foul smell and it needs a major disinfectant."

We will need a hell of a big spray can here in Cobourg ! Intellectual laziness, towering pride and excess laxism are the true facts. Thks Wally.
