less than a month before nomination!

And what do we have? Almost the same number of people on the lists as last month! It appears that the Cobourg Municipal Election is a non-issue in most people’s minds as we progress into the first weeks of Summer. As to the candidates there really are only two new ones, the others have appeared on the ballot sheets before – some many times.

There is one constant question however – when will the current Mayor Lucas Cleveland register as a candidate? In that vein it should be noted that a well organised person who wants to be the Mayor of any Town should at least have a website and email that connects the Citizens to the campaign. Mr. Cleveland has not reactivated his email or his website. An email to the “lucasforcobourg@gmail.com” elicited this reply on the 1st May:

Thank you for reaching out to Lucas Cleveland, Mayor of Cobourg. Please reach out to Mayor@cobourg.ca should you have any question or concerns. This email address is not actively monitored. It was created for the purposes of the 2022 municipal election and will be again be used for the next 2026 municipal election. You can always contact keuale@cobourg.ca who is assistant to mayor and council to book an appointment or schedule a phone call.

Another email on the same day explained the email situation and came from the official email address of the Mayor of Cobourg:

Hell Mr Burd,
I’m just getting back from meetings in Ottawa yesterday and now dealing with the funeral arrangements for the OPP officer for next week.   I will work on this on my own time over the weekend send it back  to you early next week .
Thank you for reaching out and I appreciate you keeping future election communication outside of official town channels.
Lucas Cleveland

Then came the explanation for the non-responses from the election email address:

Oh I get the emails still….. so it’s never not been working.  I  just have the bounce back response that goes out to ensure residents didn’t continue to send  Complaints to that email expecting a mayors response.
Kindly
Lucas Cleveland

So back to the NOW the Town is in suspense about Mr Cleveland’s non-registration. I guess as he has declared himself to be a “Non-Politician” then this kind of campaign behaviour is to be expected but it does lead to great speculation as to his motives and a lot of room for campaigning for his opponent.
But what else has happened in the public eye? Not much. We speculate that the candidates are in the ‘research’ or community outreach stages of the campaign. That is to say they have told all their friends and relatives that they are in the race and could they support them and are designing their leaflets.
Joel Scott had a great public event that upgraded his profile; he emceed the Cobourg Sports Hall of Fame inductions. No other candidate has been noticed doing public events. Adam Bureau’s open stage every hour or so on the Main St outside his store still continues and the constant barrage of invective against the “three Bs” still spews from the commenters on the Cobourg News posts. The way each post that Mr. Draper puts up seems to develop into “I’m not voting for them!” Much like “Godwin’s Law” of the Internet. “Godwin’sLaw states that the longer an online political discussion continues, the more likely it is that someone will compare something to Hitler or Nazis. In this case sub out Nazis and Hitler for Bureau, Beatty and Burchat.
SO we wait; until August 21 – for more candidates, including Mr. Cleveland, and a higher public presence from the nominees.
